Project Overview

StepJockey is a team on a mission to tackle obesity and promote fitness by labelling the world for calorie burn.

The idea is grounded in behavioural economics and is designed to strengthen the hearts (and tone the legs) of office workers and commuters in cities around the world. The StepJockey website and app are FREE so anyone can label their environment and track their climbs in minutes.

We are targeting those most at risk of poor health, who may be overweight/obese, reluctant to exercise and often have desk-bound work.

Organisation

StepJockey Ltd

Team

The multi-disciplined team are experts in the health and fitness field and include a project manager overseeing development, marketing and content, web developers, app developers and designer.

Project Brief

The StepJockey website allows any set of stairs to be mapped and rated for calorie burn in moments. Once stairs are rated, you can print off a set of FREE smart posters immediately or order a set of smart signs with NFC. All StepJockey smart posters and signs can be read by the StepJockey app allowing users to track their performance and share with friends.

You burn more calories climbing stairs than jogging. It's an extremely good form of exercise and physical activity.

The technology allows StepJockey to fit seamlessly into the built environment and daily urban life, making it easy to reach those too busy to exercise or anyone who might be embarrassed to go to the gym. This makes StepJockey particularly effective in kick starting physical activity and behaviour change in those with a BMI over 25.

StepJockey is also available to companies and organisations who want to build the initiative into their existing health and wellbeing plans for employees.

Project Need

StepJockey is about looking at the positive and promoting fitness for everyone a little bit at a time. We tell people how many calories are in food but we don’t tell them where they can burn them off. Through StepJockey, we are offering the opportunity to put that right.

The world is a gym and through StepJockey we aim to positively label it as such.

In trials involving more than 250,000 stair/lift journeys, stair climbing increased by up to 29% when the building was equipped with StepJockey smart signs. When office workers were able to track and gamify their stair climbing, stair use jumped by over 500%.

User Experience

Before launch we tested and tested again. We ran a pilot and researched our product to ensure that the experience was as speedy, seamless and simple as possible. Our real-life personas supported the development process and have proved to be great case studies.

Regular updates and developments mean this experience is constantly evolving and we are currently developing a more responsive platform to improve this even more.

We wanted the initiative to reach as many people as possible so designed an experience and service that does this. It means just one person to rate a set of stairs - an office block, say - to have a positive impact on everyone who uses that building.

Project Marketing

In order to maximise our reach, we are focussing on in-bound marketing and social media with a clear content strategy to:

• Put StepJockey firmly on all corporate occupational health/CSR roadmaps
• Intrinsically link stairs and stair climbing with exercise in the public mind
• Own and popularise idea of labelling the world for for calorie burn

We want to spark employee buzz around stair climbing and lead the conversation on how built environment affects health and wellbeing.

We formally launch in November however have started publishing regularly to across a number of channels including Facebook, our blog and Google+. On Twitter we like to lead the way and recognise the best in health and wellbeing initiatives.

Project Privacy

Our servers are hosted in a protected environment with secure backups performed regularly. All passwords assigned during the signup processes are protected and cannot be decrypted.

We update our security system regularly and perform ongoing research on new practices and technologies that can improve our services.

Our service is hosted on third party servers with may be outside the EEA.
