Project Overview

Barnardo’s multi-platform, storytelling app, 'Wud U?', is an educational tool designed to help teachers and other professionals educate young people about the risk of sexual exploitation. The app illustratively displays various scenarios in which users can think about the decisions they would make if they were in the same situation and receive advice and guidance based on their choices.

Project Brief

As one of the UK's leading children's charities, Barnardo’s works directly with over 200,000 young people every year, They run over 900 vital services across the UK, including counselling for children who have been abused, fostering and adoption services, vocational training and disability inclusion groups.

Red C created a captivating, interactive suite of apps across Windows, iOS and Android platforms to appropriately address and raise awareness of the sensitive issue of sexual exploitation among children.
Child sexual exploitation can occur via the internet and mobile phones and the ‘Wud U?’ app encourages the safety of young people through the use of illustrative, real life scenarios.

The app acts as a preventative tool, combining Barnardos’ existing knowledge and external market research, to reach out and educate children on the danger of being exploited when vulnerable online and in everyday scenarios.

Project Need

In order to appeal to the younger generation, ‘Wud U?’ makes use of photo-realistic, colourful illustrations to guide users through the hard-hitting, real life stories whilst aiding the decision making process. This interactive, visual approach was put in place to ensure a more effective means of communication, as opposed to stating rules and facts that children would be less likely to relate to and understand. The app generates different outcomes depending on their choices and explains the potential consequences of the more risky decisions.

User Experience

Once the user has agreed to the disclaimer and terms and conditions, the app opens the home screen menu where they have easy access to tips, resources and support as well as the main hub of the app - the stories.

Within the stories, the user chooses a character and is taken through a specific chain of events depending on the choices made. The app asks and encourages decisions to be made at the end of each section. These questions are worded specifically to reassure an impartial choice - not what they think is right, but what they would actually do.

To make the story engaging, we used a leading illustrator to create photo-realistic, quirky designs.

Young people were in involved in the design and content of the app including selecting the style and preferred illustrator.
